Head Embroidery Designer at Mary Katrantzou: Portfolio

Between August 2018 to August 2020, I held the fantastic role of Head Embroidery Designer at Mary Katrantzou. During this time, I had the opportunity to work on some incredible projects, collaborations, beautiful commercial ranges and of course MK’s stunning runway collections.

Each of the shows will always hold a special place in my heart as each one is so unique, distinctive and really represents a moment in time. I will forever be so proud of what we achieved as a Team at MK. As an embroidery designer, working on these collections has been a dream come true and creatively so fulfilling.

The techniques we used across the seasons vary widely from intricate sequin and bead work, individually dip dyed ostrich feathers, fringing, and laser cut creations- to name a few. The images from each season below represent just a snap shot of the true time and work that goes into these incredible pieces.. but these are some of my favourite moments and memories.

SS20 Show.

The SS20 Show was staged at the iconic Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, Greece and took inspiration from Ancient Greek Philosophers and their discoveries. Each look in the collection had its own unique focus including Pythagorus’ Theorem, the Golden Ratio, & DNA whilst other looks boldly represented subjects from Astrology, to Medicine and Cartology.

The Embroidery:

In creating these looks, we developed hundreds of samples and used almost every embroidery technique imaginable including,

  • Thread embroidery & ombre thread fringing

  • Print matched beaded fringing

  • Digital machine embroidery

  • Micro beading

  • Ostrich, stripped feather and cockerel feather embroidery- individually applied & created in 3D boa’s

  • Three dimensional solid feather structures in the shape of olive branches and The Atom

  • Highly textural, 3D sequin work using large pailettes, micro sequins and padded embellishment

  • Intense crystal embellishment and ombre crystal cup-chain patterns using thousands of Swarovski crystals

SS19 Show.

For the 10 Year Anniversary Collection, the show explored the concept of ‘collectables’ and included themes and graphics reminiscent of MK’s collections through the years. Looks included collectable themes such as postage stamps, jewellery, art and perfume bottles. Inflatable plastic jackets playfully explored the idea of glass preservation cases for dried flowers and butterflies, whilst intricate embroideries of sequins and quilled plastic represented cut glass vases.

The Embroidery:

  • Micro Cutdana beading in graphic stamp patterns

  • Laser cut leather and perspex including hand linked laser cut perspex jigsaw puzzle looks
